OUR STORY
The paths of Luc Van Loon and Christopher Chen crossed in 2011 at the "Weingut zum Sternen". While Australian-born Christopher works as an oenologist in Würenlingen, Luc, a hobby winemaker, produces his own wine there.
The two share a passion for high-quality beer that stands out from the crowd. From an initial vision, the first own beer was created in the winery in 2013. Under the supervision of Michel Van Loon and Rudi Cleymans, two brewers from Belgium, a Pale Ale is brewed, inspired by Coopers Brewery from Australia.
After the company foundation in 2014, the CVL Brewers GmbH was registered as brewery no.606 in Bern. In 2015 the new brewery was set up in the former wine cellar of Christian Voser in Neuenhof.
Supported by Jan Van Loon and a team of volunteers, Luc and Christopher established the brand "Chen + Van Loon - Beer handcrafted by Winemakers" over the next few years and expanded their range.
Since Christopher Chen decided to return to Australia in 2020, Luc and Jan Van Loon have been running the brewery together.
With our vision of slow expansion without compromising on quality, we are constantly working on new creations and pushing our products forward through research, experimentation and education. Rigorous quality management guarantees consistent quality and the characteristic taste of the beers.
OUR TEAM
LUC VAN LOON
The Belgian moved to Switzerland in 1988 and is working as a research geochemist at the Paul Scherrer Institute. The father of three is a passionate winemaker in his spare time and makes his own wines.
JAN VAN LOON
After completing his apprenticeship as a polymechanic, Jan decided to study mechanical engineering while working. He shares with his father the passion for balanced, highly aromatic beers that stand out from the crowd.
